Call centres are there to help people
"People start phone calls angry and frustrated, and finish them calm and happy, it's nice to know I helped to improve someone's day."
Brendan works in a council housing department in Norwich, and spends most of his day talking to tenants - many of whom are vulnerable people, either elderly or disabled. He takes pride in being able to help their tenants with everything from broken cupboard doors to more serious issues; once he ended up calling a social worker for a lonely tenant he was talking to.
Call centres teach life skills
"Pretty much all of us started the job thinking that it was going to be a quick stop until we found something better, but we all discovered that it was the most interesting role we have had."
Freya is a student working for the Dell helpdesk, and she believes she has learnt skills that will serve her well after graduation. Working in a call centre requires good communication and an ability to solve problems creatively and efficiently, skills she believes any employer would consider valuable.
